2021/2022 Season Review

What a season! Nothing could stop East Leake from having one of its best and most successful seasons ever, not injuries, not a longer than normal match fixtures schedule, not even coronavirus itself! In spite of these and other challenges, East Leake saw an influx of new players and the flourishing of several juniors representing the club in league matches, resulting in a terrific past year badminton wise and socially.

The Mens 1 team avenged their misfortune at missing out on certain promotion in 2020 - as a result of Notts Badminton Association deciding to void the season due to the COVID19 pandemic - by becoming the newly crowned Division 2 champions beating a series of formidable challengers including St Giles, Carlton and Boots. The team could not secure the division title until the last game of the season and even then found itself in the surreal position of not only having to win but to take at least 11 games to ensure a superior games difference to second placed St Giles. The team duly delivered with a convincing 6-3 win to which team captain Jack Rogerson calmly reacted stating "I always knew we'd do it".

Having finished second from bottom in Division 5 pre-pandemic, the Mens 2 team roared back and crushed all before them with five wins from five to easily take Division 5 and gain promotion for next season.

East Leake entered a new Mens 3 team for the first time since 2017/18, primarily as a vehicle to blood its many excellent up and coming juniors. The team acquitted itself really well, winning two of six matches with some fantastic team and individual performances along the way.

The Mixed 1 team who had expected relegation prior to the voiding of the season, bounced back to secure their place in Division 2 this time around despite the presence of some very strong teams including Beeston Fields and Byron.

The club entered a Mixed 2 team this season for the first time in nine years and weren't disappointed. Starting out in the bottom division, the team lost only one match to a strong Byron side who had also started out with a newly entered team, every other match was quite literally a total rout with East Leake winning all the other fixtures 9 - 0. Division 5 awaits the team next season.

Last but definitley not least.......the postponed Nottinghamshire Cup finally recommenced with East Leake resuming as a semi-finalist. The team put in a stellar performance against a strong and highly fancied Carlton in the semis, emerging as victors to set up a final against Beeston Fields, currently the best team  in Nottinghamshire. With a large contingent of East Leake club members and their partners and families noisily cheering on, the team put in a heroic effort against a mighty Beeston Fields side littered with county and international players, but ultimately succumbed and had to settle for the honour of runner-up for just the second time in the Clubs history, the first appearance being back in the 2008 final. With every player contributing, it really was a memorbale perfromance. However, perhaps the standout moment was victory for Becky and Laura in the Ladies doubles rubber against an outstanding Beeston Fields pair  including a lady who had represented the Isle of Man at the Commonwealth Games. Not bad for little old 'unfashionable' East Leake!
